Commonweal Housing is a registered charity, but not a Housing Association. This is because we want to be free to make bold experiments in housing. Our experiments aim to resolve those social injustices where a combination of housing and support services for people will help them establish themselves in life through making wise choices and so have a fair chance to realise decent aspirations.
We work both alone and with others to identify social injustices where 'The Commonweal Formula' could make a difference and then strives with Partners to create prototype role model solutions that are rigorously evaluated by independent third parties appointed by Commonweal. When Proof of Concept has been achieved, Commonweal and its Partners work to change public policy to eradicate the social injustices and also encourage and assist other organisations to replicate the role models that have been created.
We are privately financed and do not seek Government grants to fund any of our projects.
We choose Partners that have an established reputation and renowned skills in helping people overcome the social injustices that are the focus of a particular project.
We normally only operate within the London Boroughs not only because of the terms of our constitution but also because it enables us to give close attention to projects and enables others to easily access them for study when the time is appropriate.
We are always delighted to explore solutions to social injustices brought to us for discussion providing, of course, they fit into our terms of reference. Our main Terms of Reference are Our 12 Criteria and Our 5 Strategic Targets.
